Shift Differentials: Paying the Premium Without the Manual Fixes
Nights, weekends, unsocial hours, differentials reward them. Configure the rules to apply automatically or your team recalculates by hand forever.
Shift differentials are the premiums that reward people for working the hours nobody wants, nights, weekends, unsocial shifts. The configuration challenge is making them apply automatically and correctly, because the alternative is your payroll team manually working out who's owed what, every single period.
Define the differential windows precisely
A night differential that applies from a set hour, a weekend premium, a bank-holiday rate, these are time windows with rules. Define them exactly against policy, including how they treat a shift that straddles the boundary.
Handle overlapping premiums
A night shift on a bank holiday might qualify for two premiums. Decide, and configure, whether they stack, whether the higher wins, or some other rule. Leaving it ambiguous means inconsistent pay and grievances.
Test the boundary shifts
The shift that starts before the differential window and ends inside it is where the config earns its money. Test those deliberately, not the clean shift that sits neatly inside one window.
Real scenario: a client paid night differentials by having supervisors manually flag them, error-prone and endless. We configured the differential windows properly so the system applied them from the actual hours worked. The manual flagging vanished, and the disputes about who got missed vanished with it. Let the rules do the counting, not a tired supervisor at midnight.
