Your First Agent: Pick the Boring, High-Volume, Low-Risk One

The temptation is to build something impressive first. The wisdom is to build something boring, safe, and high-volume, and earn trust before ambition.

When a client gets excited about agentic AI, the instinct is to build something flashy for the first project, something that'll impress the board. That instinct is a trap. Your first agent should be boring, safe, and high-volume, because its real job is to earn trust, not applause.

Boring means well-understood

A process everyone already understands, with clear rules and a known 'right answer', is the ideal first target. The agent's behaviour is easy to judge, and when it works, everyone can see it works. Novelty adds risk you don't need on day one.

High-volume means visible value

Something that happens a lot, a repetitive query, a frequent check, delivers obvious return quickly and gives you plenty of cases to prove reliability. A rare process proves little and saves little.

Low-risk means a mistake is recoverable

Pick something where an agent error is caught easily and fixed cheaply, not something that could pay someone wrong or breach privacy. Build confidence on safe ground before you let an agent near the high-stakes work.

Real scenario: a client wanted their first agent to handle a complex, high-stakes comp process to make a splash. We talked them into a boring, high-volume policy-query agent instead. It worked flawlessly, everyone saw the value, and trust built fast. That trust is what let us tackle harder problems later. Boring first, ambitious once you've earned it.
