HCM Extracts vs OIC: Choosing the Right Tool for the Data Flow

Not every integration needs OIC. HCM Extracts handles bulk outbound beautifully. Knowing which to reach for saves build time and headaches.

A mistake I see constantly: teams reach for OIC to solve every data-movement problem when HCM Extracts would do the job with half the effort. Both are the right answer sometimes. Knowing which is which is experience worth having before you start building.

HCM Extracts for bulk outbound

Need to send a scheduled file of worker data to a benefits provider or a downstream system? HCM Extracts is purpose-built for it: define the data, the format, the schedule, done. Reaching for OIC to replicate what Extracts does natively is just more code to maintain.

OIC for real-time, bidirectional, and orchestration

When you need event-driven flows, two-way sync, transformation across multiple systems, or anything real-time, that's OIC's territory. Extracts can't orchestrate; OIC can.

Sometimes you use both

A common clean pattern: HCM Extracts generates the data, OIC picks it up, transforms and routes it. Each tool doing what it's best at. Don't force one to do the other's job.

Real scenario: a client built a complex OIC integration to send a nightly benefits file, custom code, error handling, the lot. It was fragile and nobody could maintain it. We replaced it with a scheduled HCM Extract that produced the exact same file natively. The custom integration went in the bin, and their maintenance burden vanished. Right tool, less code, fewer 3am calls.

Facing this on a live programme? I work directly with client teams on Cloud HCM architecture, payroll and integration delivery.
